Sonitas Durack
Heritage Hall of Fame - 2026
Sonitas Durack Q2064 ( aka Muffin) was born in 2005 & is currently owned by James & Jozette Hazeldine.
She was bred by Mario Flego & first entered the show ring in NZ approx 2012-13 after a training stint in Australia with Rob Hodgman & from a breeding to Hodgmans stallion EB's Phalaris prior to returning to NZ, producing a filly foal in 2011.
Shown by James firstly for Mario, then for himself & Jozette as lessees, she was one of the most dynamic horses to be seen in the cutting pen. Exceptionally athletic & a dream to watch, she had many many show wins & multi Championships including, but not limited to :
2012 Classic Champion, 1= Open Horse ( class of 14) at the 2012 Futurity Show
2013-14 National Open Non Pro Champion:
2014-15 achieving a Certificate of Ability & Certificate of Merit
2017-18 National Champion Mare & Reserve NI Hi Point Open Horse Champion.
She is one of the few horses to be awarded a score of 76 at a club show. Muffin retired with LTE $2822
The filly she produced in 2011 was Duracks Rey of Light owned by Geoff & Janine Taylor, who has had numerous wins & Championships including but not limited to:
2019-20 National Finals Novice Horse Champion & = Reserve Champion Open Horse: National Hi Pt Novice Horse.
2020-21 National Finals Novice Horse Champion & Open Non Pro Champion: National Hi Pt Novice Horse: Certificate of Ability:
2021-22 National Finals Reserve Champion Open Horse & National Hi Pt Mare.
2022-23 AQHA-NZ Open Horse Champion: National Finals Reserve Champion Open Horse & Champion Open Non Pro: National Hi Pt Open Horse.
2023-24 National Finals Reserve Champion Open Horse: National Hi Pt Mare Plus multi SI awards. She was ridden mostly by Geoff Taylor but also shown by Gemma Williams
Muffin has bred 7 foals since retiring from the showring. 4 more fillies & 3 colts.
2019: GB Spoonfula Durack: shown by Gemma Williams. 2025 Derby Champion: National Hi Pt 5 yr old: CSCHC Derby Champion.
2020: GB Sonitas Spoonful: Shown by James Hazeldine. 2025 Open Futurity Champion:
KCCC Futurity Champion: CSCHC Futurity Champion. Sold to newbie Schirelle Philips & in her first season with limited shows, she won Restricted Rider Champion & Rookie Rider Champion at the 2026 Futurity Show & Restricted Rider Champion & Rookie Rider Champion at the 2026 National Finals. Also Reserve Derby Champion ( ridden By Grant Mackie) at the 2026 Futurity Show
2021: GB Fancy N Chrome: Shown by James Hazeldine. 2026 National Finals Novice Horse Champion & highest score of the show with a 74 in the Open Horse first go-round.
Muffin is now 20 years old & still going strong. She has certainly left a legacy, with every progeny shown to date (by 3 different sires) becoming champions. They all look to have inherited her athleticism & cow sense & will be a credit to their bloodlines for sure.
We look forward to seeing her younger babies out & about when they reach show age. Muffin has certainly set the scene as an amazing promoter & producer of quality cutting horses in NZ & well deserving of a place in our Heritage Horse Hall of Fame.
